Behind the Scenes: Buying for Next Season
If you’ve ever walked into Wild Posse and wondered how we decide what ends up on the racks, there’s actually a lot that happens behind the scenes before a new collection ever makes its way into the shop.
While you might be thinking about what you’re going to wear this season, we’re often already looking ahead to the next one.
Buying for a new season starts up to a year in advance. There are catalogues to look through, collections to explore, colours and fabrics to consider, and plenty of conversations between us about what we think our customers will love.
But it’s not simply a case of picking the prettiest pieces.
We think about our local families
Being based in Esperance means we’re not buying for just anyone, anywhere.
We think about the families who walk through our doors and what actually works for them.
We think about our local weather, our relaxed coastal lifestyle, weekends on the farm, school runs, family outings and all the everyday adventures that happen around Esperance.
We want the clothes and products we stock to be things that can genuinely be used and enjoyed — not just something that looks good hanging on a rack.
Quality matters
One of the biggest things we look for when choosing a brand or product is quality.
We want pieces that feel good, wash well and can be worn again and again.
Especially when it comes to children's clothing, we know it needs to handle real life. Kids run, play, climb, get dirty and generally put their clothes through their paces!
We look closely at fabrics, construction, fit and the little details that can make a product something you'll reach for over and over again.
The Wild Posse test
One of our favourite questions when we're buying is pretty simple:
Would we buy this for our own family?
If the answer is no, it probably doesn't belong at Wild Posse.
We like stocking products that we genuinely love and would happily recommend to a friend. Things that make us think, “Yep, that's a really good one.”
We’re also lucky enough to have plenty of real-life testing happening around us — because between our own families and our Wild Posse community, we know pretty quickly which products become favourites!
A little bit of everything
We also try to create a balance within the store.
There are the everyday pieces you'll reach for constantly — comfortable basics, practical essentials and those reliable favourites that work week after week.
Then there are the pieces that make you stop and say, “Oh, I love that.”
We want both.
We love finding those special pieces that add a little something to an outfit, while still making sure there are plenty of practical options for everyday life.
Every piece has to earn its place
The tricky part about buying for a boutique is that we simply can't stock everything.
There are so many incredible brands, collections and products out there, and sometimes choosing what not to buy is just as difficult as deciding what to buy.
Our space is limited, which means every product has to earn its place.
Will our customers love it?
Is it good quality?
Does it offer something different?
Is it practical?
Would we genuinely recommend it?
If it ticks those boxes, it gets a pretty good chance of making its way onto our buying list.
And then we wait...
Once the orders are placed, there's a whole lot of waiting.
We might have chosen the collection months ago, but it can be quite a while before those boxes finally arrive at Wild Posse.
And honestly, that's one of our favourite parts.
Seeing something we chose nearly a year earlier arrive in the shop, unpacking it for the first time and then watching our customers discover it for themselves is pretty special.
So next time you spot a new collection on our racks, know that there’s been a lot of thought behind those pieces.
From the first catalogue we flick through to the moment it lands in store, we're always trying to create a Wild Posse range filled with things we love, things we believe in and things we think will work for our families here in Esperance.
Because at the end of the day, we don't want to stock everything.
We want to stock the right things. ♡
